MASS flays 'fake' killings

Jorhat, Nov. 21: Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS) today said it would move the National Human Rights Commission to protest against the cold-blooded murder of two persons by security forces at Mandir Chapori a few days back.

A five-member central committee team of the Samiti from Guwahati today visited the Mandir Chapori island near Majuli where an Ulfa and two civilians had died in an encounter with security forces recently.

The secretary of the organisation, Aditya Lahkar, in a news conference meet today, alleged that it was a pre-planned operation by the forces and that the encounter excuse put forward by the police was false. He said if required, the matter would be placed before the UN.

The Samiti alleged that the police and army were harassing the people of Majuli in the name of picking up Ulfa cadres as was evident from the large number of arrests ' a total of 16 'which had been made on the island from May 10 till date.

Lahkar alleged that the Ulfa cadre, whom the police had taken along with them, had been killed to save face after the civilians were shot.
