Imphal, Feb 10 (ANI): In an endeavor to promote water sports in Manipur, the 23rd National Canoe Sprint Championship was recently organized here.
The event saw participation of more than 500 enthusiastic canoeists across the country.
The championship was held at the picturesque Komlakhong Water Sports Complex on the eastern side of Loktak, the biggest freshwater lake in the northeast.
The six-day event was organized by All Manipur Canoeing and Kayaking Association under the aegis of the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.
"I am very proud that Manipur is able to host this 23rd Canoe Sprint National Championship and people are very much overjoyed and members of the association are feeling wonderful," said Dr. KH. Ratankumar Singh, chairman of the organizing committee.
Over 500 canoeists from 25 states including Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh participated under the supervision of 250 officials. A huge crowd turned out to witness the event.
Participants were astounded by the scenic beauty of Manipur.
"Everything is nice, the place is very good. We have come here for the first time to participate. I have taken part in international and national level events before. It is very good that Manipur is hosting such an event,' said Rahul, a player.
Manipur is reaping the peace dividend. The area around Loktak Lake, which was once a hotbed of militant outfits, is now hosting a national sports event. The change is clearly visible. (ANI)
