Mamata government to sell onions

Kolkata, Aug 13 (IANS) To rein in soaring prices, the West Bengal government Tuesday decided to sell onions through mobile fair-priced shops besides undertaking additional cultivation to improve supply.

With retail prices shooting beyond Rs.60 a kilo in the city, onions will be sold from Wednesday along with ginger in six markets in Kolkata.

"Along with selling them, we have also undertaken additional monsoon cultivation of onion to improve the supply by Durga puja," Pradip Majumdar, advisor to the chief minister on agriculture and allied sectors, told IANS.

Majumdar said seeds have been distributed to farmers for the additional cultivation of onions in 1,000 hectares.
