Kolkata Knight Riders jumped to the top in the points table of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, after thrashing Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 8 wickets in match No. 11. After three games, both teams, along with Sunrisers Hyderabad, have won two matches and lost one, but KKR’s two victories so far in IPL 10 have been in bigger margins. However, the contest at Eden Gardens produced staggering cricket. From a minor fire breaking out in the press box to Sunil Narine blazing the stadium with his fiery performance, let us have a look at the top highlights. Live Cricket Scorecard: Kolkata Knight Riders vs Kings XI Punjab, Match 11 at Eden Gardens
Gambhir gets Orange Cap: Gautam Gambhir scored a resolute 72 not out, helping his side chase down 171. With this knock, he becomes the top run-scorer, surpassing David Warner. Gambhir now has 167 runs in 3 matches to his name. Gambhir also equalled Warner in scoring most half-centuries (33) in IPL.
Umesh Yadav takes four-for: Had Umesh Yadav not dismissed David Miller and Wriddhiman Saha off consecutive deliveries, KXIP would have scored past 200 and the result may have been different. Apart from these stunning batsmen, he also got the better of Glenn Maxwell and Akshar Patel. In fact, had Narine not opened the innings and taken everyone aback with his explosive batting, Umesh would have been an ideal winner of Man of the Match.
Narine stuns everyone: Before Narine started his match-winning show, he had dropped a simple catch at third-man. Trent Boult, the bowler, looked down in disgust. And little did he know that he will end being the only bowler in KKR unit to go wicketless. Anyway, that ship had sailed and Boult would have high-fived with Narine for making amends with both bat and ball.
Narine took 1 for 19 in 4 overs. That was usual. He is renowned for that.
He stunned everyone when he walked in with Gambhir to open the innings. He had done it with BBL once, scoring 21 off 13 for Melbourne Renegades. Asking him to do the same was a gamble, but KKR had enough ammunition in their armoury. They took a chance, and it did wonders. Narine scored 4 fours and 3 sixes for his 18-ball 37.
Butter fingers: Bad fielding continued haunting KKR. It had cost them the match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium. At Eden Gardens as well, they dropped two catches. Along with Narine, it was Robin Uthappa who could not hold onto Maxwell’s inside edge.
In addition, a series of overthrows helped Mohit Sharma sprint four runs.
