MUMBAI: The spurned lover who has been arrested in Mumbai for attempting to pour acid down his former girlfriend’s throat wanted to kill her.
Jitendra Sakpal (21) had bought a highly-concentrated acidic cleaner from a store on Saturday and allegedly forced the 17-year-old girl to consume it, said the Mumbai police on Sunday.
The girl, who suffered injuries on her face, lips and tongue, was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai on Saturday.
The police said Sakpal and the girl — the residents of suburban Dahisar — were in a relationship, but parted ways a few months ago after the girl’s parents disapproved of it.
After Sakpal’s repeated requests the girl met him on Saturday and the duo went to Gorai Jetty where an argument broke out between them. “The accused forced her to consume acid. A few passersby intervened when Sakpal raised an alarm and handed him over to the police,” said the police.
The girl has not been able to give her statement to the police owing to severe burns injuries. However, the girl’s family members told the police that the accused had been stalking her for the past six months.
Sakpal, they said, even tried to talk to the girl a few times when she was returning from her college.
Fed up with him, the girl had complained to the Dahisar police. Acting on the complaint, the police had summoned the accused and asked him to stay away from her.
The family’s move, however, didn’t go down well with the accused who again asked the girl to reconsider her decision. “Jilted, Sakpal decided to kill her,” said the police.
The Borivali police said the accused had procured the toilet lotion from a store in Virar. “We will interrogate the the shopkeeper,” said a police officer.
Sakpal has been remanded in the police custody for four days.
