Irani Trophy: Vijay puts Rest of India in control

Vijay scored his 10th first-class century as RoI ended Day 2 with a 78-run lead over Rajasthan.

Murali Vijay was in top form as he scored his 10th first-class century to put Rest of India (RoI) firmly in control on the second day of the Irani Cup match against defending Ranji champions Rajasthan at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore today.

Vijay, who ended the day 151*, shared 150+ partnerships with both Ajinkya Rahane and skipper Cheteshwar Pujara, as RoI went into stumps at 328 for 2 in response to Rajasthan's sub-par total of 253. RoI are already 78 runs ahead, and if Rajasthan are to get back in the match, it will require a Herculean effort from the bowlers on the third day of the match tomorrow.

Bist, Yadav shine on opening day

Vijay and Rahane (81) gave RoI a solid start adding 173 runs for the first wicket as the Rajasthan bowlers failed to make any impression on the duo before the latter was run out. Pujara, who scored his maiden Test century against New Zealand last month, then got together with Vijay as the pair increased Rajasthan's pain with their 153-run partnership for the second wicket.

Rajasthan finally got their second breakthrough of the day when Aniket Choudhary had Pujara (78) caught behind by Dishant Yagnik just before stumps. Vijay and S Badrinath will look to increase RoI's lead on the third day, while Rajasthan will hope their bowlers can put in a much improved performance on the morrow.

Brief Scores: Rajasthan 253 (R Bist 117*, Dishant Yagnik 40, Umesh Yadav 5-55, Ishant Sharma 2-17) vs Rest of India 328 for 2 (M Vijay 151*, Ajinkya Rahane 81, Cheteshwar Pujara 78, A Choudhary 1-57)
