Fifties by Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan followed by a collective effort from the bowling unit enabled Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) win match 21 of Indian Premier League (IPL) against Delhi Daredevils (DD) by 15 runs. Playing at their den, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad, SRH registered their 4th win in 6 games, thus getting to the second spot in the points table. In the process, they also kept their unbeaten record at home this season intact. DD paid the price for their weird policies of not playing Shahbaz Nadeem and holding back Chris Morris in the dugout during the chase. They remain at the 4th spot in the points table following this defeat. FULL CRICKET SCORECARD, Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Delhi Daredevils – Match 21
Chasing 192, DD started well, with Sam Billings hitting IPL debutant Mohammad Siraj for 3 boundaries in the second over of their innings. However, Siraj kept his cool to dismiss Billings in the same over, bagging his maiden IPL wicket. Karun Nair, who has had a dismal run since hitting his triple-ton against England, walked out to bat at No. 3 to join Sanju Samson. The two added 71 runs for the second wicket, setting up the platform for the chase. Nair looked good, hitting 5 fours and a six en route his knock of 23-ball 33. However, he was dismissed against the run of play when he ran himself out in Yuvraj Singh’s only over, which also saw the big-hitting Rishabh Pant return for a golden duck. Pant went for a slog on his very first ball but ended up giving a simple catch to David Warner at long-on.
Samson followed soon, becoming Siraj’s second victim. He scored 42 off 33. DD perhaps missed a trick here. Instead of the big-hitting Morris they opted to send Angelo Mathews, who has been trying to find his rhythm after a long injury layoff. Mathews, along with Shreyas Iyer, tried his best to get DD across the line. But the duo fell short in the end as DD lost by 15 runs. Mathews fell for 31 on the penultimate ball while Iyer remained unbeaten on 50, getting to his fifty on the final ball.
Earlier, Sunrisers skipper Warner won the toss and elected to bat first. SRH made two changes for this game, leaving out Mohammad Nabi and Barinder Sran for Williamson and Siraj. DD also made a change: Jayant Yadav played his first match this season, replacing Mohammed Shami.
DD started with the off-breaks of Jayant, a good move considering both Warner and Dhawan are left handers. Warner fell for 4, as the extra bounce from Morris surprised him.
The rest of the SRH innings was all about Williamson and Dhawan. Williamson showed SRH what they have been missing so far. It did not look like he was coming in for his first game this season. He looked comfortable from the word go, taking over the aggressor’s role while Dhawan took backseat. Both went about their business in a nonchalant manner, accumulating runs with shots all around the park. Zaheer Khan shuffled his bowlers well but failed to break through.
Williamson completed his fifty off 33 balls and shifted gear after that. Meanwhile, Dhawan quietly brought up his fifty — his first in 9 IPL innings — off 40 balls in the 15th over. Williamson eventually fell for 89. Dhawan (70) followed him shortly. Deepak Hooda and Moises Henriques provided finishing touches to the innings with brief cameos. For DD, Morris was the pick of the bowlers, with 4-0-26-4. Nobody else got a wicket or was able to contain the flow of runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad 191 for 4 (Kane Williamson 89, Shikhar Dhawan 70; Chris Morris 4 for 26) beat Delhi Daredevils 176/5 in 20 overs (Shreyas Iyer 50*, Sanju Samson 42; Mohammad Siraj 2 for 39, Yuvraj Singh 1 for 6) by 15 runs at Hyderabad.
Man of the Match: Kane Williamson.
