Gujarat Lions are having a torrid time in the 10th season of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. Having played five games, the Suresh Raina-led side have lost four and are currently languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2017 points table. Gujarat Lions’ latest defeat came against Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Match 20 where Chris Gayle hammered GL bowlers, scoring 77 off 38 deliveries. Both Gayle and Kohli (64 off 50) went on to put up a 122-run stand for the first wicket which laid a platform for a strong total in the first innings eventually posting 213 runs on the board with help from Kedar Jadhav (38*) and Travis Head (30*). GL, in their run-chase, kept on losing wickets regularly despite Brendon McCullum holding end from one end. McCullum scored 72 off 44 deliveries while Ishan Kishan did a cameo of 16-ball 39 but eventually fell short of 21 runs of the RCB total.
Raina talking in the post-match presentation said, “200 was a pretty good score, but we still batted well. But despite it being par, I felt it was difficult to chase on this wicket. We need to improve our bowling a lot.”
Talking about his bowlers’ performance, Raina said, “We gave them 185 in 15 overs in an earlier game and need to learn a lot. We are lagging quite a bit in the tournament. The spinners need to read the wicket, they need to change the pace and bowl slow. The bowlers are practicing hard but they are not able to execute their plans in the game. From here on if we can win a couple of games we can come back.
Talking about Ravindra Jadeja and Shivil Kaushik, he further added, “Jadeja needs someone to support him from the other end. He needs to vary his pace and he is a mature bowler, he has done very well for us, for CSK and in Test cricket as well. Shivil did well for us in the last season but is pretty inexperienced.”
Kishan displayed great determination in the death overs almost pulling off the game for his side. Talking about his power-hitting, Raina added, “Ishan Kishan is a great prospect for the Indian team. He’s worked very hard on his batting, led India in the under-19s and has done well in the First Class games as well. He’s talking to the coaches and I want him to enjoy his cricket and go out there to express himself. Though we lost a couple of wickets in between, had someone been out there in the end, we could have done it.”
GL will now play their next game against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on April 26 at the same venue.
