Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) captain Glenn Maxwell was on Saturday night left unimpressed, rather angry, during the press conference post his team’s second consecutive defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. The Maxwell-led side was handed a crushing 51-run defeat by the rampant Delhi Daredevils (DD), at the latter’s home ground where KXIP failed to put up any fight whatsoever. Chasing 189 to win, Kings XI Punjab could register a mere 137 for 9 in 20 overs. Maxwell had an ordinary game on Saturday night, as his team failed to keep the lid on the Delhi batsmen and the batsman himself was dismissed for a second-ball duck. During the mandatory press meet after the game, Maxwell admitted that Kings XI Punjab must pull up in all departments going ahead into the IPL 2017 tournament. However, the last question left Maxwell angry, to which first he replied with the words ‘shocking question’, and then replied with a more detailed answer. Maxwell was asked whether he had difficulties playing spin bowlers, to which he said, “That’s a shocking question,” Maxwell said. However, he soon got angry and got up after saying, “Do you understand in the last three games I’ve hit leg-spinners for six repeatedly? S*** question.”
Maxwell’s reply to the question of him not being comfortable against spin was somewhat wrong, given that the right-hander celebrated his Test comeback last month with a terrific century against India, who had a spin bowling attack comprising Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2016-17 at Ranchi. Even in the final Test, Maxwell top scored with 45 in the second-innings Australian total of 137.
Maxwell and KXIP made a fine start to IPL 2017, scoring 44 not out and 43 not out in the two games that his team won first-up. KXIP, however, have stumbled after a strong start, losing their next two games.
