Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) halted Mumbai Indians (MI) six-match winning streak as they defeated them by a small margin of 3 runs in Match 28 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017. MI were unable to surpass the total of 160 as the Man-of-the-Match Ben Stokes played a crucial role in halting the Rohit Sharma-led side’s impressive run, finishing with the figures of 2 for 21 in 4 overs. MI are still currently at the top of IPL 2017 points table and had won all their last 6 games whether home or away, managing to put up a stellar performance in this 10th edition of IPL. MI were at one point cruising towards the target with both Rohit and Kieron Pollard at the crease. But quick wickets towards the ending stage of the game saw them losing the match. Talking in the post-match presentation ceremony, Rohit said, “It is disappointing after being so close. We tried our best, gave everything we could. Disappointing not able to finish.
We need not be too critical about the performance. It was a great effort to reduce them under 170. In the middle overs, we lost few wickets and that was a little mistake. Overall a great game.”
MI bowlers did commendable job in the first innings in stopping RPS to a decent total of 160 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. The Pune-based franchise had got off to a flier start but MI spinners did the trick for their side and pulled the game in the court in the crucial stage.
Praising his bowlers, Rohit said, “The pitch was little dry and was assisting spinners. Both the spinners did a good job. It’s very important to understand the pace at which you need to bowl at the Wankhede. It’s harder with dew coming in and both our spinners bowled really well. As I said, we don’t have to be critical of our performance.”
Out of eight games that Mumbai have played they have lost only two games and that too against the same team i.e RPS. “We’ve been playing good cricket. We need to continue doing that. We don’t want to lose any games. We have to leave this game right here and move on. We got to focus on the matches coming up and get our act together,” he said.
