Mumbai Indians (MI) edged past defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match 10 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 at Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday. SRH could not manage enough runs on the board, which resulted in their first loss in the ongoing edition, and third overall against MI in as many games played between them at the Wankhede. MI won the game, chasing 159, with 4 wickets and 8 balls to spare. In the post-match conference, SRH’s premier bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar termed his side’s score as below average and stated that dew played a crucial role in their first defeat. “I don’t think there was anything wrong with the batting. They tried best. It was one of those days where you try your shots, but they go in the fielders’ hands. We were without any loss in the 10 overs. It was a good start but even 160-170 was not a par score with dew in the ground. It was just those days when things couldn’t go our way”, Bhuvneshwar told on his team’s batting performance. SRH posted 158 for 8 in 20 overs with David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan leading charge.
Speaking on his captain’s well timed reverse sweep, Bhuvneshwar added, “In the nets, he bats right handed. If he bats for 20 minutes, at least 5 minutes he bats right handed. We weren’t really surprised when he had that shot. It was an amazing shot. In T20s, you can see such shots. Even AB (de Villiers) plays these shots, now he is playing. We weren’t really surprised.”
SRH could not defend 159, but Bhuvneshwar was their stand-out performer with 3 scalps. He dismissed Kieron Pollard, Nitish Rana and Krunal Pandya to end with a spell of 4-0-21-3. In this way, he also got hold of the Purple Cap. Sharing his thoughts on the bowling efforts, he said, “It’s difficult to defend. It is an average score in T20s, but in this ground it was below average. We had to take 2-3 wickets in the powerplays, but we couldn’t do that. It is really difficult to bowl when dew is there. It is not an excuse, but it is very difficult. Yes, it wasn’t enough score on this ground.”
