With the commencement of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, social media giant Twitter tapped into the 1.2 billion cricket-crazy market of India with their new player-based emojis. Twitter took notice of the fan fare amongst Indian fans and fans of the game in general and came out with the special emojis — in a first. This has led to a massive spike in interaction on the social media. Latest reports suggest that as many as 2.6 million Tweets were recorded on IPL 10 in the first fortnight of the tournament. It should not come as a surprise that most fondly used emojis are of Indian cricketers. Former India skipper MS Dhoni and current India as well as Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain Virat Kohli are on top of the chart of top 10 most-used hashtags for player emojis. The list also features AB de Villiers, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Rohit Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar according to a report in indianexpress.com.

At the launch of the initiative, Aneesh Madani, Head of Sports Partnerships, India and South East Asia, Twitter had said, “Twitter is the best place to see what’s happening in your world right now, and we are the live connection to cricket’s culture. Over the last decade, there have been over 84 million tweets related to the IPL and the league has been one of our most innovative global sports partners. We are thrilled to launch these special Twitter emojis with IPL for the historic tenth season.”
