Chasing a stiff total of 177 at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune, during the match No. 24 of 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the Steven Smith-led Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) pulled off a brilliant victory by 6 wickets. The win was crafted by none other than one among the world’s best finisher in lilmited-overs cricket, MS Dhoni, who scored 61 not out off just 34 deliveries, including 5 fours and 3 sixes. Dhoni started his innings quite slow but later on; he began accelerating and in no time RPS were close to victory. Dhoni finished the game with a last-ball boundary when RPS needed 2 more to win. Dhoni has been off his usual elements in recent times but the way he made this chase impossible, it once again reminded many of his successful chases in the past. Dhoni hit the winning shot with a boundary in the final delivery when two more runs were needed. After clinching the match towards in their favour, RPS captain Smith came in full praise of Dhoni and said, [It] “Got pretty close towards the end there. MS did what he’s done for such a long period of time. When he’s under pressure, he comes through more often than not.”
Smith further accepted the fact that RPS bowlers conceded 10-20 runs more to SRH by saying, “Probably thought it was a 160-165 wicket. We probably didn’t execute our plans as well as we would have liked. Moises and Hooda played well too.”
He also applauded opener Rahul Tripathi, who laid the foundation of win by hitting an impressive 59 off 41. “Tripathi was very good at the top there. These are big five games for us. If we can keep playing like that, and climb up the ladder it will be nice,” said Smith.
With this win, Smith’s RPS took a giant leap in the IPL 2017 points table as they moved to 4th spot from 8th. Their next match is going to be against Mumbai Indians (MI) at their fortress Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
