Kolkata Knight Riders are sitting on the top of the points table with 14 points in 9 games. One of the major factors behind Kolkataâs successful showing in this edition of the IPL has been the form of their skipper Gautam Gambhir. He has amassed 376 runs in 9 games at 136.72 with four half-centuries. And on Friday he once again led from the front as KKR chased down Delhi Daredevilsâ total of 160 with 22 balls to spare.
Chasing under lights, Kolkata did not have the most auspicious start as Kagiso Rabada sent opener Sunil Narine back for just 4 with the score reading 9/1. But Gambhir combined beautifully with Robin Uthappa to add 108 runs in just 66 balls to snatch the game away from Delhiâs grasp.
In fact, Gambhir upped the ante the moment Uthappa for a well-made 59 off 33 balls. He put the foot on the accelerator to not only bring up another fifty, but also record 4000 runs in his IPL career.
He kept waiting for the bad deliveries and sent them to the boundary as his unbeaten knock of 71 off 52 balls included 11 hits to the fence. Even though Gambhir did not hit a single six, he scored at a strike-rate of 136.53.
Being his modest self, Gambhir said that there was still a long way to go in the tournament and wanted his boys to keep up the good work.
âWe still have a long way to go, most boxes ticked but we can't be complacent. Once you lose momentum it's difficult to get back. But very professional performance today, to restrict them to 160 after the start they got.
âAt one stage I was tempted to bat first but we have been chasing really well so stuck to that. Every player we pick, we pick with a lot of trust, and if you show trust they repay it. We can put some more effort in our fielding, save 10 or 15 runs, will be easier to chase it down,â he said.
