Suresh Raina-led Gujarat Lions (GL) succumbed to yet another defeat, this time against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Match 26 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 at Rajkot. Raina was not happy with the performance of his bowlers and said they will have to step up and deliver. KXIP ended their four-match losing streak after an all-round performance ensured an easy win by 26 runs at the end. Hashim Amla was adjudged the Man of the Match for his brilliant knock of 40-ball 65. Raina also went on to say that the bowlers are lacking confidence and a couple of injury concerns have not made life easy for GL. Talking about GL’s bowlers’ performance, Raina said, “You can’t chase 190 every time. Bowlers have to do something. We haven’t won any 4 p.m. games. It’s a learning curve for us. Spinners have to step up,” Raina said after the match. “Nathu got cramps, so I had to bowl Smith in the second last over. The bowlers are lacking confidence. They are not executing on match day. They do well in the nets, but not on match day, he added. READ: IPL 2017: All-round Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) crush Gujarat Lions (GL) by 26 runs in IPL 10, Match 26
Raina believed that KXIP’s target of 189 was still achievable. “We thought we could still chase it down, but while we were batting, the wicket got slower and Sandeep [Sharma] and Mohit [Sharma] bowled good slower balls and made it hard for us to hit,” the skipper said. Raina acknowledges that his side need to string some wins together. “At this stage, I can’t say anything. We have to go there. Couple of injury issues, but we have to win more games, we can’t just talk in training. We’ll go to Bengaluru, regroup and hopefully we can win,” he added.
