Yuvraj Singh in all likelihood, will return to the national fold when the selectors meet in Chennai on Monday to decide the squad for the lone T20 International and the first three ODIs against Australia.
Yuvraj has had some good scores in the recent past as he performed well against West India ‘A’ before proving his mettle once again in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy. The Indian team has performed well in the 50-over format lately, winning the Champions Trophy in England and the tri- series in the West Indies.
The 31-year-old Yuvraj last played for India on January 27 against England at Dharamsala but failed to keep his place in the team because of poor form.
After a lengthy physical training stint in France, Yuvraj has done enough to earn a return to the Indian squad.
Leading India ‘A’ against West Indies ‘A’, Yuvraj scored 123, 40 and 61 in a three-match series and was equally effective in the lone T20 in which he scored a quickfire 52. The Indian team has done well under Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the recent past and it is unlikely that the selectors will make sweeping changes in the squad for the Australia series.
Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina are certain to retain their places and so would spinner R. Ashwin. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will be another certainty in the squad.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was Man of the Match in the Challenger Trophy final, will lead the pace attack alongside Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. Pacemen R. Vinay Kumar and Mohit Sharma could also get the nod from the Sandeep Patil- led selection committee.
While Dinesh Karthik is also likely to retain his place, Abhishek Nayar has also been in good form and was instrumental in India Blues’ success at the Challenger Trophy. The left-hander has good scores under his belt to present his case before the selectors with scores of 102 not out, 57, 91, 75 not out and 12 in his last five innings good enough to win him a spot in the Indian squad.
Australia’s tour will start with the lone T20 International in Rajkot on October 10.
