ICC launches "urgent investigation" into fixing allegations involving umpires

Dubai, Oct 9 (ANI): The International Cricket Council has launched an "urgent investigation" into the latest match-fixing allegations.

In a major sting operation carried out in July, August and September ahead of the recently concluded ICC World Cup T20 tournament, India TV undercover reporters exposed six ICC umpires, belonging to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, willing to fix matches for money during T20 matches.

The six umpires who were exposed in the sting named "Operation World Cup" are: Nadeem Ghauri and Anees Siddiqui of Pakistan, Nadir Shah of Bangaldesh, and Gamini Dissanayake, Maurice Winston and Sagara Gallage of Sri Lanka. The seventh umpire Sharfudoullah Shahid Saikat of Bangladesh refused to give any favour in lieu of money.

"The ICC and its relevant members have been made aware of the allegations made by India TV this evening and calls on the station to turnover any information which can assist the ICC's urgent investigations into this matter," the cricket's governing body said in a statement.

"The ICC re-iterates its zero-tolerance towards corruption whether alleged against players or officials. The ICC confirms that none of the umpires named were involved in any of the official games of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka."

However, a seventh umpire approached during the sting operation earlier in the summer declined to get involved, the station claimed.

The ICC said it reiterates its zero tolerance towards corruption whether alleged against players or officials.

The allegations will spark an investigation by the ICC's anti-corruption unit although ultimately the investigations and any disciplinary processes may become the responsibility of each national board. (ANI)
