A pedestrian was arrested in front of Rajabazar Science College on Friday morning for allegedly harassing a student.
The accused has been identified as Jaspal Singh, 35, a resident of the Girish Park area in north Calcutta.
Singh had allegedly passed derogatory comments at the student of psychology and gesticulated at her while she was entering Calcutta University's Rashbehari Siksha Prangan, popularly known as Rajabazar Science College, on APC Road. The girl alerted a cop posted nearby who nabbed the man.
The institution has lodged a complaint with Amherst Street police station around noon.
"This morning one of our students was harassed by a pedestrian while she was entering the campus. The person made bad gestures and passed indecent remarks at her," said Amit Roy, the secretary of Rajabazar Science College.
Singh, who works in a garment factory on APC Road, has been booked for outraging a woman's modesty.
He will be produced in court on Saturday.
Another student of the institution was allegedly molested on a running bus by a group of intoxicated youths near Sealdah station last Thursday.
The investigating officers are yet to identify the accused because of "non-availability" of details from the student.
A university official said the vice-chancellor had called up the police commissioner and asked for intensified vigil in the area.
