Have to execute our plans: Gayle

WI's first game is on Saturday against Australia

Calcutta: Chris Gayle warmed up for the ICC World T20 tournament with a brilliant half-century as the West Indies thrashed Afghanistan in a warm-up tie on Monday. After the match, he said he is in good shape and is ready to take on the opposition attack.

“I’m really pleased with the way I batted (on Monday). I’m in good form,” Gayle said. “The sub-continent wickets are really good for batting and I’m eager to utilise every opportunity.”

Gayle said if West Indies can execute their plans, they can make the final. “The subcontinent teams will pose a tough challenge… But then, every team will have a fair chance. But if we can execute our plans, we can make it to the final.”

West Indies have been drawn in Group B alongside Australia and Ireland. Gayle shared his thoughts on the match-ups ahead.

“The main challenge is going to be the first match against the Aussies. We have to get past them to ensure that we qualify for the next stage. Ireland will be a tough team to beat… They have upset a lot of big teams so we have to remain careful,” he said.

In the warm-up match against Afghanistan, pacer Fidel Edwards also performed brilliantly, using his variations well to end with three wickets.

Talking about her performance, Edwards said: “The pitch was dry and in favour of the batsmen. I tried to mix up my pace and bowl a lot of slower balls and then slip in the quicker ball at pace. I felt I did that really well and it brought me success."

“I got wickets with the full length balls as well as the short deliveries so the mixture worked. I wasn’t bowling flat out… But I was pleased to bowl aggressively and accurately on a pretty flat surface here.”

A confident Edwards added: “The result was pretty good for us. We did really well in the field, we bowled to our plans so you would have to say it was a good work-out for the bowlers in this match. We are trying to build up to Saturday when we face Australia."

“It is very hot out here and a few guys struggled a little bit with the heat, but everything is geared towards the first match.”
