Harassed from Metro to road

A 25-year-old woman returning home to central Calcutta from work was molested on a Metro train and then harassed again outside Mahatma Gandhi Road station on Tuesday night.

The woman's husband and a few passengers caught hold of the accused, Aniruddha Bose, 32, and dragged him to the police kiosk near the Metro station.

The businessman, a Salt Lake resident, was taken to Jorasanko police station, where he was arrested.

The victim, whose house is a five-minute walk from the station, boarded the train at Rabindra Sadan station around 9.45pm.

"The compartment was almost empty. When the train was entering Chandni Chowk station, I saw the man advance towards me. I was surprised but kept quiet as he stopped a few paces away," the woman recalled.

"It was around 10 when the train entered Mahatma Gandhi Road station. When I was about to get off, he stood behind me and touched me twice. When I protested, he shot back 'tor moto meye amar chena achhe (I know well what kind of girl you are)'. I tried to answer back but he kept using filthy language. Some co-passengers who got off at the station asked me to ignore him."

The man allegedly continued to stalk her till she came across two Metro policemen. When she confronted him again, he accused her of "harassing" him.

However, the sight of two cops might have scared him as he left, muttering a threat: "Tui baire bero, dekhey nichhi (I will teach you a lesson once you come out of the tunnel)".

The woman waited for a few minutes before coming out but was shocked to see him at the exit. "I froze. He started jeering me," she said.

The woman's husband accompanies her back home from the Metro station every night.

On Tuesday, instead of standing outside the station gate, he was waiting in front of Mahajati Sadan, a few metres away.

"I reached the spot seconds after receiving my wife's call. This man was staring at her. I asked him what the matter was. Instead of answering me, he tried to run away. I got hold of him. But in the struggle, he scratched my neck," said the victim's husband.

Bose was overpowered with the help of some passengers and handed over to the police. He was booked for molestation, wrongful restraint and causing hurt.
