'Gym hater' Rooney never as good as Ronaldo, says ex-fitness coach

London, July 3 (ANI): A former fitness coach has claimed that Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was never as physically fit and good as his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo because he hated the gym.

Rooney and Ronaldo were at Old Trafford for five years together until the Portuguese star went to Real Madrid in 2009, The Sun reports.

Stating that Rooney, who has been plagued by doubts over his weight and fitness, never did want to work out, former fitness coach Mick Clegg has claimed that Rooney did not see the importance of the gym and used to say that he is here to play football.

Clegg further said that he wished that he could have forced Rooney towards working out more, although he added that Rooney was afraid of bulking up if he spent too much time in the gym.

According to Clegg, Ronaldo, however, had a different attitude and would follow whatever training was prescribed, adding that the Portuguese lived and breathed football 24/7 with a 'phenomenal' dedication.

However, Clegg said that Rooney could still be as good as Ronaldo if he emulated his attitude to the gym, adding that he is an amazing athlete when he puts his mind to it.

Rooney, who spent last week downing cider and scoffing junk food at Glastonbury, now faces tough pre-season training under new boss David Moyes, the report added. (ANI)
