New Delhi, Feb. 1: General Motors India is betting on the Chevrolet Sail sedan and multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) Enjoy to boost volumes in a sluggish passenger car market.
The local unit of the US car maker, which today launched the compact sedan Sail, will drive in its MPV Enjoy in the next couple of months, said the company's India president and managing director Lowell Paddock.
GM had launched a hatchback version of the Sail ' U-VA ' in November last year.
"With our launches ' Sail U-VA, Sail sedan and the upcoming Enjoy ' which fall in the growing segments of the market, we hope to bring in additional numbers in 2013," said Paddock.
GM India sold 96,700 units in 2012, a decline of 13 per cent from a year ago.
GM is confident that India has the potential to be among the top three global markets. "Sale upturns and downturns are normal in any emerging country. There is a huge latent demand in India," said Paddock.
The Sail sedan is priced between Rs 4.99 lakh and Rs 7.51 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
The first month of the new year saw mixed response from car buyers with homegrown SUV major Mahindra and Mahindra posting a 33 per cent increase in sales and Maruti's sales rising marginally by around 2 per cent.
MandM sold 26,555 units and Maruti 1,03,026 units in January. Hyundai Motor India saw its sales rise 1.19 per cent to 34,302 units.
