Ghanchakkar Music Review

By Rafat, Glamsham Editorial

One of Bollywood's top production house, UTV (Spot Boy) and the young and highly talented director Raj Kumar Gupta have together regaled audience with classy entertainment in the form of two rare critically and commercially successful films, AAMIR and NO ONE KILLED JESSICA. The music of both the films was handled by new-age composer-lyricist duo, Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya. This time the expectations rise manifold (from the talented duo) as the lead actor is none other than music's very own lucky mascot, Emraan Hashmi! So let's check out if GHANCHAKKAR audio does spin in the right direction! Richa Sharma's 'Lazy Lad' is in the same corridor (in terms of theme and spirit) as 'Main Kya Karoon Ram' (SANGAM) and it works mainly for Richa's emotive, full throated, uninhibited rendition as also due to the hilarious Punjabi and Hinglish lyrics. One awaits actress par excellence Vidya to enact this on-screen with Emraan! 'Allah Meherbaan' can be classified as a techno-qawwali, but it has all the nuances of a traditional 'qawwali', except of course for its background fusion western-Indian arrangements. The number takes a cue from Late Ghulam Farid Sabri (check out, the intermittent 'Allah'). Divya Kumar does well but Kailash Kher would have been a more appropriate choice in this situational satirical track. The whacky title track, 'Ghanchakkar Babu', sung excellently by the composer himself in modulating vocals, aided by a funny, fun-filled chorus, is an infectious theme song with superb brass band arrangements. Amitabh's hilarious and zany lyrics mostly Mumbaiya style, highlight the character of the main male lead and provides a sneak peek into movie as well. 'Ghanchakkar Babu' remix by Tanuj Tikku and Aftab Khan is loaded with heightened pace and beats, and is like any other remix. 'Jholu Ram', a situational fun-filled whacky track, assumes importance as it marks the comeback of Altaf Raja, the highly popular voice of the masses with 'Tum To Thehre Pardesi' and quite a few hit numbers to his credit. Though Amit has tried to live up to Altaf's image by adding couplets (but in English, instead of Hindi/Urdu, Altaf's forte!). One does wish that he had chosen a better tune than this pedestrian one. A music video featuring the legendary singer and Emraan Hashmi too is doing the rounds in order to promote the song. To sum up, the audio of GHANCHAKKAR turns out be an ordinary soundtrack. One expected the team of Amit-Amitabh to have come up with something above the ordinary, especially as it stars, Emraan Hashmi, whose enviable track record of super-hit compositions gets a speed breaker here as one cannot pin-point even one chartbusting number here. 'Lazy Lad' and to an extent the title track are our picks. However one must add that a director of the caliber of Raj Kumar Gupta does not rely on music for the success of his films and GHANCHAKKAR, with Hitman Hashmi, may just work despite average music! Rating - 3/5
