George Best's widow urges fans to save 'alcoholic' Gazza from Man U legend's fate

London, Feb 4(ANI): Widow of Manchester United legend George Best has prayed that another football great Paul Gascoigne would not drink himself to death like her hubby, and she urged the fans to help the ailing star.

Alex Best said seeing Gascoigne in such a bad way brings back the most horrible memories of George when he was in the grip of the drink that eventually killed him, adding it's heartbreaking to see Gazza so deeply gripped by his addiction again.

Best died aged 59 in November 2005 following years of alcohol abuse and even a liver transplant failed to save him, and Alex now fears Gascoigne will suffer the same fate.

Alex said she always hoped Gascoigne would find a way through this and that the similarities would end with Gazza finding a way to live his life without alcohol.

She added if Gascoigne dies from his alcoholism it would be a tragedy.

Alex said footie fans could help Gazza survive by offering him their friendship instead of a drink.

Alex said the trouble is too many people want to be able to say, 'I bought Gazza a drink', adding she used to track George down to the pub where people would be lining up to get him a drink.

She added that she would beg them to stop, saying they might think they were being kind but they were actually helping kill him, adding it's the same now with Paul.

Alex said a chat about the old days might not save Gazza, but if it delays his next drink it can only help, adding she misses George and always will, but she just hopes someone is able to reach Gazza before it's too late. (ANI)
