CB Series: India V Sri Lanka 5th ODI at Adelaide; 14th February 2012
Sri Lanka 236/9; India 236/9 (Match tied)
The scorecard of the match is here.
All figures between 0 and 5 unless otherwise mentioned.
*Figures in the brackets represent the players’ Match IMPACT when it is not restricted between 0 and 5, as it is in a career context.
The highest Impact performance in the match came from Gautam Gambhir (Match IMPACT 6.31*) and was closely followed by MS Dhoni (5.57*) and Dinesh Chandimal (5.13*). Gambhir’s knock of 91 runs off 106 balls (Batting IMPACT 5.81*) was a display of a complete batting performance as he scored at a faster rate (Strike Rate IMPACT) than the match norm, absorbed pressure to ensure India didn’t slip into a trough after Tendulkar’s early wicket (Pressure IMPACT), built partnerships (Partnership Building IMPACT) as well as a strong base for India’s chase (Chasing IMPACT).
However, MS Dhoni was declared as the man of the match for his unbeaten innings of 58 runs off 69 balls which was only second best to Gautam Gambhir’s overall Match IMPACT. This goes on to show how people still focus mostly on the power hitters of the game rather than the comparatively slower but effective ones who actually help in setting up the chase. Dhoni’s innings also had Strike Rate IMPACT, Partnership Building IMPACT and Chasing/Not out IMPACT but none of them were higher than Gambhir’s effort.
It should also be noted that Dhoni’s Match IMPACT is very close to Gambhir only due to the fact that Dhoni also garnered Impact points for his wicket keeping and captaincy
Dinesh Chandimal for Sri Lanka also played a crucial innings upfront with his innings of 81 runs in 91 balls (Batting IMPACT 5.13*). His batting impact in the match was only second best to Gambhir’s. His ability to score at a fast pace (Strike Rate IMPACT) while bailing Sri Lanka out of a precarious position of 28 for 2 (Pressure IMPACT) is worth highlighting. He and Sangakkara steered Sri Lanka from a spot of bother and hence both of them also had a Pressure IMPACT in the match.
In the bowling department Vinay Kumar had the highest Bowling IMPACT of 3.93 after his returns of 3 wickets for 46 in his 10 overs. He was also the only bowler from both the sides to have a Partnership Breaking IMPACT for his wicket of Jayawardene which ended the latter’s 94 runs partnership with Chandimal.
Closely following Vinay Kumar is R Ashwin who had a Bowling IMPACT of 3.30 in his stipulated 10 overs. His image of a tight economical bowler in the limited overs format of the game was also boosted as his Economy IMPACT was the highest amongst all the other bowlers.
For Sri Lanka, Perera (Bowling IMPACT 2.38) and Malinga (2.23) were their lead bowlers but unfortunately for the Lankans they were a tad too expensive and had a negative Economy IMPACT in the match.
For Sri Lanka, Rangana Herath was extremely disciplined and managed to keep the Indian batsmen in a tight leash (Economy IMPACT) as he gave away just 33 runs in his stipulated 10 overs. His failure to take any wickets during the middle overs however made sure that he finished with a Bowling IMPACT below 1.
One surprising element in the match however was the failure of the all-rounders from both the teams. No player in the entire match managed to log both the Bowling and Batting IMPACT over 1.
All in all there were three players in the match who did not have any impact in the match. Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav featured from the Indian side whereas Tharanga continued his series of horror shows upfront for the Sri Lankan team.
