Gadkari gets tax summons

Nagpur, Jan. 12 (PTI): The income tax department has issued summons to BJP chief Nitin Gadkari and some associated companies for alleged tax evasion.

Department sources said Gadkari had been asked to appear in person.

"He had sought an adjournment for two weeks citing that he is not present in Nagpur. He has been given the extension and the new date for appearance is January 21," a source said.

"We need to confront him with the probe that we have conducted and verify the facts," the source added.

The department has been probing various firms that invested in Gadkari's company, Purti Power and Sugar Limited (PPSL). The probe unit here has sent a report to the Central Board of Direct Taxes in New Delhi.

The department, according to sources, has allegedly found the details of almost 30 companies that have been "in transactions" with the PPSL.

Sources close to Gadkari said he had neither received any notice from the tax department, nor had he been asked to appear before any official.

They said there was an income tax case against PPSL, which has been going on for some time, but Gadkari was not involved in the matter. Gadkari had resigned from the Purti group some time back.
