Fog hits flights

New Delhi, Jan. 14 (PTI): Dense fog affected the schedule of over 150 flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport today, including that of external affairs minister Salman Khurshid, for one-and-a-half hours.

Khurshid's flight, which was to take-off from Palam Technical Area for Bhutan at 9.30am, was delayed by two hours, sources said. Around 130 flights were delayed and 20 flights were diverted to other cities.

New Delhi (PTI): New Delhi Municipal Council will install 118 CCTV cameras in central Delhi this year at an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore to augment security in the area. The cameras will be installed in eight commercial and office complexes and 20 electric sub-station buildings, the civic body's budget said.

Madurai (PTI): Fifty-five people were injured in two incidents at jallikattu (bull taming sport), which were held as part of Pongal, at Avaniyapuram on Monday. Thirty-one people were injured when they tried to tame the bulls. A police constable and 23 spectators were injured at another incident after some bulls ran amok into the crowd.

Mumbai (PTI): Bombay High Court on Monday asked the Maharashtra government to reply by February 12 what action it had taken against policemen who arrested two women for a Facebook post on Mumbai shutdown during Bal Thackeray's funeral.

Indore (PTI): Eleven schoolchildren were injured when their van had a head-on collision with a private bus on Indore-Rau road on Monday, police said. The van caught fire after the accident. The condition of some students is stated to be serious. The driver and the helper of the bus fled after the incident.

New Delhi, Jan. 14 (PTI): The law exempting women two-wheeler riders from wearing helmets would remain in force as any change will be objected by the Sikh community, the government told Delhi High Court today.

The transport department of the Delhi government is facing contempt proceedings for not making helmets compulsory. The court has fixed the matter for further hearing on May 16.

New Delhi (PTI): A clinic has been ordered by a consumer forum to pay Rs 2.05 lakh to a 25-year-old man for wrongly diagnosing him as HIV-positive and depriving him of an employment opportunity abroad. The forum said the clinic was "not only negligent but also rash" in declaring Mohd Dilshad unfit for a job in the Gulf.

Bhopal (PTI): A 23-year-old man, who had to appear before police in connection with abduction and rape of a minor, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by consuming poison in a train. Golu Sharma was vomiting when his lawyer went to the station to receive him. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead.

Ahmedabad (PTI): A Pakistani national, who had escaped from a Gujarat police station, was arrested again on Monday. Parbat Amarsingh Koli escaped on Sunday when he was asked to step out of the lock-up for cleaning purposes.

Lakhimpur Kheri (PTI): Residents of villages adjoining the Dudhwa tiger reserve in Uttar Pradesh have formed anti-depredation squads to ward off elephants that have been entering human settlements for the past few years. A team of experts from Assam visited the villages and submitted recommendations three months ago.
