New flag proposed for Australia amid push to 'move on from British heritage'

London, Jan 29 (ANI): A new flag has been proposed in Australia, which would include the Union flag and the Aboriginal flag.

The move comes amid a new push to 'move on' from the country's British heritage.

Dr John Blaxland, a military historian from the Australian National University who designed the flag, said he hoped to capture all aspects of the country's history, including its Aboriginal heritage, its colonial past and multiculturalism, the Telegraph reports.

According to the report, the flag includes 250 dots to represent the range of Aboriginal languages and the native tongues of Australia's immigrants, as well as a white stripe to create an "echo" of the Union flag.

Peter FitzSimons, an author and former rugby union player, backed the calls for a new flag, saying the current flag "is no longer a symbol that unites us, it divides us".

According to the paper, the proposal for a new flag comes amid a renewed push for a republic led by Wayne Swan, the deputy prime minister, who said the Bodyline cricket series in the 1930s showed the need for Australia to weaken its links to Britain. (ANI)
