Fantastic show by Sandipan

Calcutta: An inspiring show by Sandipan Chanda saw the Grandmaster finish third at the Gibraltar Open Chess meet on Friday.

According to the website, Sandipan finished with eight points along with Russia's Nikita Vitiugov and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France. But as per the Fide tiebreak rules, Sandipan was placed third while Vitiugov was adjudged champion, followed by Vachier-Lagrave.

Sandipan's earliest exposure was through The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship. His performance in this year's Gibraltar Open, where he was placed above big names such as Nigel Short (who finished fourth), Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov and Gata Kamsky, only signifies that Sandipan is cut out for the big league.

In the 10th round, Sandipan beat Vietnamese Le Quang Liem, having opted for a Slow Slav defence in a game that lasted 37 moves. Sandipan won against Shirov on Wednesday, besides settling for a draw against David Navara and Kamsky.
