Doherty's spectacular dismissal of Chandimal may have nailed spot in Oz team for India

Sydney, Jan 25(ANI): Xavier Doherty's stunning dismissal of Sri Lankan batsman Dinesh Chandimal in the fifth one-day at Hobart might have been the moment that nailed his spot in the Australia's Test touring party for India next month since it is the sort of delivery desired against the fine players of spin from the subcontinent.

Selectors could not help but be impressed by Doherty's head-turning 3-21 against Sri Lanka in Hobart, particularly his eye-catching dismissal of Chandimal.

Chandimal had no idea about the Doherty delivery that pitched on off-stump and straightened, playing nowhere near it as the ball went on to knock over middle and off stumps, reports.

Australia is expected to turn back time by giving the left-arm spinner the nod as Nathan Lyon's understudy, ahead of such left-field spinning candidates as Queensland leggie Cameron Boyce and NSW captain Stephen O'Keefe, the paper added.

Doherty played two home Ashes Tests in 2010 but has not donned the baggy green since, although he has been a relatively regular fixture in one-day cricket.

That promising recent one-day form looks like getting Doherty the nod for the Indian Test tour now that original back-up Test spinner Michael Beer is injured, the paper said.

While Doherty is not a big wicket-taker or massive turner of the ball, skipper Michael Clarke will at least know what he will be getting if the left-arm tweaker is thrown into the fray, the paper concluded. (ANI)
