Dikshit trashes BJP allegations of corruption

New Del Oct 8 (IANS) Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday dismissed the allegations of corruption against her party by the BJP, saying they are "baseless" and would be "countered" politically.

"The allegations levelled by BJP are absolutely baseless. In fact these are out of context charges. They are misleading (the people)," Dikshit told reporters at her official residence.

The three-time chief minister said that along with her, three cabinet ministers will now interact with the media twice a week.

She said in these interactions she will rebut the allegations levelled by the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against her and her party.

The BJP has accused the Delhi government of colluding with power companies to hike power tariffs. It has also targeted the government for financial irregularities in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Both the charges have been denied by Dikshit.

A representative from the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) will also be present as a show of unity in the party.

Elections in Delhi are slated for Dec 4 and counting will be on Dec 8.

"Since the model code of conduct is in place, I have called all of you (journalists) here (at her residence). We will respond to the opposition charges through the media," said Dikshit who was flanked by cabinet colleagues Rajkumar Chauhan, Haroon Yusuf and Arvinder Singh Lovely.

However, cabinet ministers A.K. Walia and Kiran Walia were not present at the conference.

Over 11.5 million voters will cast their ballots in 70 constituencies in Delhi.

The main battle will be between the ruling Congress and the BJP which has been out of power for the past 15 years.

The contest has been further enlivened this time with the entry of the Aam Adami Party which has gained popularity in a short span of time and has been vociferously campaigning against both the BJP and the Congress.
