Dhoni: Needed this win badly

Calcutta: Mahendra Singh Dhoni was a relieved man after Chennai Super Kings notched up their first win in the IPL-VI.

Speaking at the presentation, Dhoni said: "We needed this win badly. In the last game, we played well but lost. The batting failed to click in that game and it was important that the batsmen play well today. I think the openers responded brilliantly."

The following are excerpts

Mahendra Singh Dhoni: It was a fresh wicket… There was no seam movement or swing for the bowlers… It was an excellent wicket to bat on. So it was important that the bowlers bowl really well.

The fast bowlers did a very good job. The spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, backed them up pretty well. Overall, I was satisfied with the performance of the bowlers.

Then Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay batted splendidly. They gave a bit of respect to the fast bowlers at the start… But in the end, they finished off the game quite well...

We did emphasise in the team meetings that we need to take catches that come our way. In the last game, we dropped quite a few … Some of them were tough chances… But we all know that in this format, if you can take one or two brilliant catches, it can change the game around. Overall, it was a good fielding performance. But there is still room for improvement and we hope to do that in the upcoming matches.

We needed this win badly… In the last game, we played well but lost. The batting failed to click in that game and it was important that the batsmen play well today. Well, I think the openers responded brilliantly. The addition of South African Chris Morris added depth to the batting line-up.

Adam Gilchrist: We didn't bat well... I think we were 40 runs short… It was a beautiful wicket so we had to pose a good total. But there are a couple of things which didn't go our way at the start.

Chennai completely outplayed us today. They bowled in the right areas and restricted us to a small total. They fielded quite brilliantly too… Then Hussey and Vijay gave good account of themselves with the bat.

They were both terrific. But we have to remain positive despite losing by a huge margin. We had started quite well… There was a time when I thought we could have scored something around the 160-165 run mark… But the batsmen failed to keep the momentum going in the end. They played some poor shots and got out.

Michael Hussey: It was a fantastic wicket to bat on… The conditions were great and the outfield was really fast. You always get value for the shots under the conditions and I really enjoyed batting out there… I enjoyed batting with Vijay… He kept me calm. We were also a bit lucky today…
