Delhi Daredevils (DD) go into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 as one of the underdogs. They have not gone beyond the group stages in the last four editions. To add to their woes, their star players Quinton de Kock and JP Duminy have been ruled out of the tournament. While de Kock is nursing a finger injury, Duminy on the other hand has ruled himself out due to personal reasons. Both of them have been important players for DD and it will be interesting to see how they cope without them. DD however have the experience of Rahul Dravid as their mentor, Paddy Upton as coach and veteran fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their captain. DD have also made a few good buys in the auction. Kagiso Rabada, Pat Cummins, Corey Anderson and Angelo Mathews are the buys. But Mathews is likely to miss the initial stages of the tournament. Anderson too has been injury prone and has been in and out of the New Zealand side as a result.
However, DD have had some excellent players in the past and have talented players going into this edition of the IPL. Let us now take a look at some interesting numbers of DD, pertaining to their performances over the last nine years:
DD were led by Virender Sehwag for four seasons. He as a result has played most matches and has scored most runs for the franchise. Sehwag in his 79 matches for DD has scored 2,174 runs, which include 16 fifties and a hundred. These are not the only achievements of Sehwag for DD. He holds the record for the highest individual score (119 off 56 against Deccan Chargers in 2011). He has also led DD in 52 matches, over three times more the next highest JP Duminy and Mahela Jayawardene (16). Not surprisingly, it is Sehwag who has hit the most fours and sixes for DD. Sehwag and David Warner formed a destructive combination at the top of the batting line-up. Between them, they have a total of 555 fours and sixes. Here is the break up:
|Virender Sehwag||266||Virender Sehwag||85|
|David Warner||146||David Warner||58|
|Gautam Gambhir||132||JP Duminy||43|
|Quinton de Kock||89||Dinesh Karthik||30|
|Dinesh Karthik||87||Kevin Pietersen||27|
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra is the leading wicket-taker for DD with 64 scalps. He also has the most number of four-wicket hauls and most 5-fors. He is also the only DD bowler to pick up a hat-trick. He picked up a hat-trick against the now defunct Deccan Chargers (DC) in the first ever edition of the IPL. He finished with figures of 5 for 17 in that match, which also happens to be the only time a DD bowler has picked up a hat-trick and a five-wicket haul. Mishra is also one of the most economical bowlers in the tournament. But he is behind the likes of Glenn McGrath, Chris Morris and Dirk Nannes to name a few.
DD are not short of wicketkeepers, despite de Kock’s absence. The likes of Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Sam Billings are more than capable of delivering for the team. But Dinesh Karthik, who is now a part of the Gujarat Lions (GL), has inflicted the most number of dismissals for DD with 45 dismissals. Naman Ojha, Kedar Jadhav, de Kock and Samson are below him.
|Dinesh Karthik||45 (15 Stumpings)|
|Naman Ojha||25 (2 Stumpings)|
|Kedar Jadhav||14 (4 Stumpings)|
|Quinton de Kock||4 (2 Stumpings)|
