Dalmiya gets ready to attend ICC meet in London

The interim BCCI chief will make the announcement after Cricket Association of Bengal’s Special General Meeting in Kolkata on Friday.

New Delhi: With just two days to go for ICC’s annual conference in London, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to confirm on whether president N. Srinivasan or interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya will represent BCCI there.

The meetings to discuss the issue have been scheduled time and again and it now seems that while Dalmiya is all set to attend the ICC meeting, Srinivasan could give it a miss. If top BCCI officials are to be believed, BCCI vice-president Arun Jaitley — already in London — could also accompany the interim chief to the conference.

A senior BCCI official confirmed to MAIL TODAY that Dalmiya is set to attend the meeting and the interim chief will make the announcement after Cricket Association of Bengal’s Special General Meeting (SGM) in Kolkata on Friday.

“Dalmiya is all set to go to London. In fact, he is set to make the announcement tomorrow (Friday) after the SGM. He will be meeting Jaitley in London and if he can convince the DDCA president, the two will jointly attend the conference. But Jaitley has been trying to stay away as he believes that this meeting will discuss cricketing matters and not legal issues,” he said.

When MAIL TODAY asked Dalmiya, he said: “Please wait till Friday and you will get to know who is going to represent BCCI at the ICC annual conference.”

But the real issue is that even Srinivasan has made it clear that he is keen to attend the meeting. The BCCI president believes that with the Decision Review System set to come up for discussion, he is the best man to represent the BCCI, a decision that hasn’t gone down too well with some Board members.

Despite the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association’s (TNCA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for June 23, all Srinivasan is bothered about is the ICC conference. “Yes, the TNCA AGM is on June 23 and while there won’t be any changes in the other committees, there is a slight possibility of an election for the president’s post. These decisions are taken on the floor, so one can’t confirm beforehand,” a TNCA official said.

In another interesting development, a BCCI official confirmed that secretary Sanjay Patel and treasurer Ravi Sawant were in Chennai on Wednesday to meet Srinivasan and discuss the issues that might crop up in London.

“Yes, they were in Chennai to meet Srinivasan and discuss certain matters as Patel is set to attend the CEO’s meeting,” he said.

As things stand now, Dalmiya is all set to board a London flight but the picture is still unclear on whether Srinivasan will have his way.
