'Cyclone' Dhawan's astonishing debut knock puts India in full control of Mohali Test

Sydney, Mar 16 (ANI): Debutant Shikhar Dhawan's record opening stand with partner Murali Vijay helped India take full control on day three of the third Test match against Australia in Mohali.

On an incredible day of action, Cyclone Dhawan arrived as world cricket's newest batting force after hitting the fastest century by a debutant in Test cricket's 136-year history, News.com.au reports.

The 27-year-old resembled an Indian tsunami as he blew the tourists away, cracking 21 boundaries to bring up his maiden Test century from just 85 balls, and it eclipsed West Indian Dwayne Smith's 93-ball ton on debut in 2004, and has also effectively torpedoed Australia's hopes of retaining the silverware in this four-Test series, the paper said.

At stumps on day three, India were 0-283 in reply to Australia's first-innings 408, and if they keep playing at this rate, they will make 700.

Dhawan (185 off 165 balls) and Murali Vijay (83) batted like Indian clones of Don Bradman to make Australia's hapless attack look like members of the Bankstown under-11s.

Replacing the axed Virender Sehwag, Dhawan wielded the willow with ferocious intent, finishing the day with 33 boundaries and two sixes as he became the first Indian in history to reach 150 on debut, the paper reported.

In the middle session alone, the Indian openers crunched 153 runs at 5.46 per over - numbers associated with a one-day international, it said.

Australia's selectors can't work miracles but it is hard to argue they didn't botch the selection of this touring party.

It was a day of heartache for Australia, who did well to scramble to 408, only to lament India's opening fireworks and the crushing dismissals of Starc and Smith, the paper added.

Starc fell for 99, with the Australian dressing-room rendered speechless after the pace man edged quick Ishant Sharma to MS Dhoni attempting a nervous cover drive. (ANI)
