Cry for narco test on SP

Patna, Jan. 23: Investigating agencies pleading for narco analysis test on suspects is common. But an accused demanding the same on a police officer to bring truth to the fore is surprising for sure.

The cop in question is Araria superintendent of police Shivdeep Waman Rao Lande. He has been accused of implicating the director of a real estate firm in a criminal case allegedly to extort money.

Director-general of police (DGP) Abhayanand today assigned deputy inspector-general of police (Purnea range) Bachchu Singh Meena to probe into the charge levelled on Lande.

The allegation against the 2006-batch IPS officer assumes significance in the wake of a deputy inspector-general (DIG) rank officer facing charges of extortion.

The DGP received a written complaint from the officials of Cygenus Developers (India) Pvt. Ltd on January 11, urging him to conduct narco test on the Araria SP, who accused one of the firm's directors ' Sanjay Singhania ' of hatching the conspiracy of smuggling the tusk.

"Sir, we request you to conduct narco analysis test on the SP with Sanjay Singhania to bring out the truth," the complaint submitted to the DGP read. According to it, a case was lodged against Mohammed Abdul Azim alias Abdul Mazid Khan with Forbesganj police station on January 6 after an elephant's tusk weighing about 3.7kg was seized during a raid on a hotel where Khan had put up. SI Brahmadev Pundit headed the raiding team.

The statement recorded by the SI mentioned the name of Sanjay as the conspirator. "While the SI claimed Sanjay was made an accused on the basis of Khan's statement, Khan refused to have told anything like that to the police," the complaint said.

It stated that Sanjay was made an accused on the insistence of the members of a syndicate on the international border, as Sanjay's firm had bagged the tender of about 4.06 acres of land at Forbesganj. The complaint said Khan was assigned to look after the proposed construction of a township on the land.

It also stated that Sanjay's father K.K. Singhania (another director of the firm) never offered Lande bribe to buy reprieve for his son. The complaint said the senior Singhania had called Saran SP Sujeet to inquire about the matter.

"Sujeet had provided K.K. Singhania the cellphone number of Lande. Thereafter, senior Singhania contacted Lande around 10.20pm on January 6 to ascertain the allegations against his son," the complaint said.

Lande said he initiated action against Sanjay on the basis of Khan's statement. "I have made a station diary in connection with the telephonic conversation with the senior Singhania," he said, adding that he was ready to face any probe.
