Shillong, Feb 15 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday urged voters in Meghalaya to vote for the Congress in the Feb 23 assembly elections to enable the party continue with its work of development and prosperity for all sections of society in the northeastern state.
"The Congress-led MUA (Meghalaya United Alliance) has making the effective use of the (United Progressive Alliance's) schemes and programmes. But there is still much that needs to be done. There are many unfinished tasks that need to be completed," he said addressing a party rally here.
Stating that the Congress' manifesto has a "progressive and inclusive agenda" for the people of Meghalaya, the prime minister said: "If you vote us to power, we will work for rapid development of the state and prosperity of its people."
"We will work for all communities and all sections of society, particularly those which are socially and economically backward, empower the local self governing bodies and work for greater say of women in administrative making decision," he assured.
He lauded his party's government for providing with an "honest, transparent and effective" administration and for taking care of the poor and the underprivileged.
Terming Meghalaya a "special state with immense potential of development" he said this potential could be fully realized only if the people have a government that works hard for their well-being and pursues policies and programmes that facilitate rapid socio-economic development.
Stating that all the flagship programmes of the UPA government were successfully implemented in Meghalaya, Manmohan Singh said that the Congress has always given the highest priority to the interests of the common man in Meghalaya.
Calling Meghalaya one of the fastest-growing states not only in the northeast, but across India, he cited the decade-old ongoing work on the Shillong bypass project, the ongoing four-laning of the Shillong-Guwahati highway, widening and improvement of the Shillong-Nongstoin-Tura road, Shillong-Silchar and the proposed Jowai bypass and the work on the railway line from Dudhnoi to Mendipathar.
"Ever since the Congress-led UPA Government came to power in 2004, we have strived for inclusive development of our country. We have endeavoured to ensure that all sections of our society and all regions of our country benefit from the rapid economic growth that we have achieved," he said.
