Clarke says 'accountable' for India Test flop show

Sydney, Mar 22 (ANI): Australian captain Michael Clarke has said that he is totally accountable for the team's struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against India, as the team is just a defeat away from becoming Australia's worst Test outfit in 34 years.

Clarke, who is unlikely to play in the fourth Test in Delhi today due to a back injury, has accepted that he should not be immune to criticism if Australia falls to a 4-0 series loss ahead of the Ashes, News.com.au reports.

Giving his backing to his deputy Shane Watson for taking over as captain if he fails a fitness test this morning, Clarke said that he is under scrutiny daily, adding that being the captain, he is accountable for his team not having any success in the India Tests.

Stating that critics are not wrong in holding him responsible for the flop show in India, Clarke said that he is disappointed in the performances of the team as he felt that they can perform better as they have the talent to do it.

Dismissing reports of the Delhi Test being labelled as dead rubber, Clarke said that he hoped to sign off the series with a win even though India had won the Border-Gavaskar trophy, adding that for a positive outcome, his team needed to play their best cricket.

Stating that his team knows the conditions, opposition and the areas where they need improvement very well, Clarke said that every single player in his team has learnt from the tour, which has been a learning curve and challenging for the players.

Currently ranked third in the ICC's Test rankings behind South Africa and England, Australia will officially drop to fourth if they are beaten by India in the fourth Test starting today in Delhi.

The last Australian team to lose four Tests in a series was in 1978-79, when Graham Yallop's side was thumped 5-1 on home soil by an English team inspired by Ian Botham and David Gower, the report added. (ANI)
