Beijing, Jan 9 (IANS) A 47-year-old Chinese man who lived with six women at the same time, married three of them "legally" and had seven children with them, has been sentenced to prison on charges of polygamy.
The man who pretended to be a bank executive was jailed for 18 months by the Pudong district court in Shanghai, the Shanghai Daily reported.
The convict surnamed Ji was caught after one of the women discovered he also lived with other females and reported to police.
Prosecutors said Ji married three of the women legally in Shanghai, Beijing and Jiangsu and lived with the three other women at the same time.
His eldest child is 23 years old while the youngest is two.
"I regret deeply for what I have done and I am so sorry to these women," Ji told the court.
He confessed to charges of polygamy but said he did not want to have children with them, the court heard.
"I married them only because the children needed a household registry," he said.
According to Chinese law, polygamy offenders can be jailed for up to two years.
