Chennai Express Music Review

By Rafat, Glamsham Editorial

Expectations are obviously humongous from an album belonging to two top notch production houses, UTV Motion Pictures and Red Chillies Entertainment, starring the king of romance Shahrukh Khan himself and directed by maverick director Rohit Shetty. Composers Vishal-Shekhar, (a regular for most SRK home productions), have been instrumental in providing the 'Baadshah' with numerous chartbusters and memorable numbers and are again the preferred choice here. All said and done, this is still a Rohit Shetty film and 'masala' music with mass appeal is the order of the day. The promotional caption, 'Come Fall In Love, Rohit Shetty Ishtyle' says it all. 'One Two Three Four' beckons the listeners to get on to the dance floor and the fast paced, high on energy 'dhinchak' dance track or item number does exactly that. The tune (Initially reminds of 'Bombay Se Rail Chali'-Akshay Kumar's ZAALIM) has heavy south Indian flavor (lyrics included) infused with North sensibilities to please both. Heavy orchestrations and percussions lend the song that authentic desi touch. Hamsika Iyer of 'Chhammak Chhallo' fame along with Vishal Dadlani render the song. The full of humour lyrics add to the fun. Featuring south sensation, hot actress Priyamani and King Khan, the song is a sure shot chartbuster. The Tamil sequence which opens 'Titli' brings back fond memories of Preity Zinta's classy dance number, Rahman's 'Jiya Jale'(DIL SE) but it enfolds into a supremely rich melodic love ballad, the kind befitting the king of romance, Shahrukh Khan. V-S have composed some superb love tracks for SRK and this will rank right up there with the rest. Chinmayee and Gopi Sunder are chosen to render the song and they are good. 'Titli' dub step version makes for a good repeat hear although one prefers the original for its pure melodic charm.'Tera Rastaa Chhodoon Na' is another melodiously rich smooth flowing composition, and as is obvious from the title itself, the song is about keeping promises and to be with each other through thick and thin. Amitabh Bhattacharya's rendition is good and so is Anusha Mani. Once again Amitabh's lyrics are like icing on the cake as they fit the situation like hand in glove. 'Nadaswaram' and synthesized 'shehnai' piece kick starts 'Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari' and is a wonderful confluence of both the worlds in terms of musical instruments as well as tune. The zany and humorous nature is kept intact through some wonderful lyrics and Arijit Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan and Neeti Mohun sing superbly in tandem.'Ready Steady Po' seems to be V-S's ode to the highly popular Reena Roy dance number, 'Disco Station' from HATHKADI, especially in the 'mukhda', but they have tried their level best to make it more contemporary and youth friendly by adding rap and hip-hop beats. A host of singers, namely Brodha V, Smokey, Enkore, Natalie Di Luccio and Vishal do the needful. The zany title track, 'Chennai Express', is another super-fast paced composition that can be used, either in the beginning of the film or end roll credits, as the names of the star cast and crew like Rohit, SRK , VS etc appear. SP Balasubramaniam, Salman Khan's voice of yore, is simply fantastic and it's his show all the way. In fact he is made to sing in that mode as well and Jonita Gandhi gives able company. However its Amitabh lyrics that are the real USP of the song as they are really apt, zany and give a peek into the film itself. As is the trend these days, the album closes with the 'Chennai Express Mashup', which is a good mix of all the main songs. On the whole, the audio of CHENNAI EXPRESS does deliver as per expectations, keeping in view that it is a Rohit Shetty film! Songs are 'masala' fun fare with fultoo 'masti' and a few sure shot hits, 'One Two Three Four', 'Titli' and 'Tera Rasta Chhodoon Na' are our favourite. The songs should definitely peak at the right time and ensure a grand opening for the Eid Bonanza.
