Calcutta: Former Australia captain Ian Chappell heaped praise on the India colts and lauded the performance of captain Unmukt Chand.
Speaking to a website after the young Indians lifted the U-19 World Cup, Chappell said that Chand played a stellar role in the victory.“The advantage that India had was Unmukt Chand, who stayed there till the end. He sorted out the chase through the tough period. That was a match-winning performance.”
Chappell argued that a talent like Chand would go to waste if he was left unnoticed for long by the selectors.
“Chand is a class above the under-19 level and he showed it today. He should be playing at a much higher level. I know he has played first-class cricket, but I think that if you leave a young player at a lower level for too long they get into sloppy habits.”
Chappell felt the Delhi youngster has it in him to go a long way.
“He is ready for far bigger challenges— not only his abilities, but also his temperament. I just hope that some smart selectors get him moving up the grades.”
