Chambel Singh's family demand his body from Pakistan

Jammu, Jan. 28 (ANI): Family members of late Chambel Singh, an Indian prisoner allegedly beaten to death in a Pakistani jail, led a demonstration here on Monday to seek his body.

Singh, who was serving a five-year jail term for spying in Kot Lakhpat Jail of Lahore city, died after beaten by prison staff over an altercation on January 15.

"We met the Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Gupta and he has assured us to take care of our demands," said Dara Singh, son of the late Indian prisoner.

The family also claimed that nobody from the government had met them.

Divisional Commissioner of Jammu assured the family that he would request the concerned authorities to make efforts to bring back the corpse.

Singh, a resident of Pragwal in Jammu, was arrested and convicted for espionage in Pakistan in 2008.

The Pakistan government has launched a judicial inquiry into the incident after jail authorities claimed that the prisoner died of chest pain. (ANI)
