Campus protest over puja

Members of the Trinamul students' wing gheraoed teachers of a south Calcutta college for over three hours on Thursday after it was decided that teachers and other employees would organise Saraswati Puja this year.

Saraswati Puja at Dinabandhu Andrews College, Garia, has traditionally been conducted by the students' union but with none in place at present because of a court order barring elections, the college authorities decided to hand over the responsibility to teachers to avoid trouble between rival unions.

"In the absence of a students' body, the college administration engaged the staff to conduct Saraswati Puja this year. But some students demanded they be allowed to conduct the puja," said principal Somnath Mukherjee.

More than 50 students, all owing allegiance to the Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad, entered his chamber around 2pm.

A source at the college said the authorities have decided to set up a committee comprising members of both the SFI and Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad to organise Saraswati Puja. The programme will be overseen by the teachers and staff.

Classes disrupted

Classes were disrupted at Mili Al Ameen College, Beniapukur, on Thursday after a clash between two groups of women teachers over alleged "abuse" of a faculty member. Two teachers were injured.
