BJP takes on Centre for authorising oil companies to make price provisions

New Delhi, Jan. 17 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday alleged that the government's move to announce freedom to oil marketing companies to decide and take a call on diesel prices is nothing but a deliberate decision to hide the facts from the people, and added that this move is an anti-people decision.

"The worst part of this diesel price hike, a decision in disguise to hike the diesel prices, by announcing freedom to oil marketing companies to decide and take a call on diesel prices is nothing but a deliberate decision to hide the facts from the people. The government is shirking away from its responsibilities, which will have a tremendous cascading effect," said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.

"All the transport costs, may be the passengers transport or the goods transport. It will also impact adversely the agricultural sector as the pumps and the fertilisers' prices also will go up, but majorly the tractor and diesel prices will impact the farmers adversely. And that is why it is an anti-people decision," he added.

Javadekar further said India is witnessing a high taxation regime on the petroleum products.

"The Central Government will this year earn more than two lakh crore rupees by taxing the petroleum products. It's a huge taxation. And the figures, which they offer for public of under recovery, are also not true. They are disputable," he added.

Talking to the media here after the meeting on Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dr. M. Veerappa Moily said there is no increase in the prices of diesel and kerosene.

Dr. Moily, however, said that oil companies have been permitted to raise diesel prices by a small quantum periodically till such time that they are able to cover Rs 9.60 per litre loss they incur on the fuel.

Dr. Moily, who refused to provide details of diesel price increase, said the raise may take place as early as tonight.

The government also raised the cap on supply of subsidised LPG cylinders to nine bottles from six per year.

"I am happy to inform the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs has decided to raise the cap on subsidised LPG to nine cylinders per household in a year from existing six cylinders," Dr. Moily said.

The consumers will get a quota of five subsidised cylinders between September 2012 and March 2013. They will be entitled to nine cylinders per annum from April 1, 2013. (ANI)
