New Delhi, July 24(ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday belittled Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's comments on the Chhapra midday meal tragedy.
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said "We thought he will have something big to say. He has asked for a thorough investigation, like we had earlier demanded. This is a good thing because his Education Minister (P.K. Shahi) had immediately gone on record making allegations, instead of asking for an investigation to be carried out first."
Some Ministers in the Bihar Government have alleged that the mid-day meal was deliberately poisoned as part of a 'political conspiracy' to destabilize the state government.
Leaders of the opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) have launched a frontal attack on the Bihar Chief Minister for not visiting the village where the incident took place.
"It is good that he (Nitish Kumar) has admitted that this is not a small incident. We have been saying the same thing that this is a grave tragedy and cannot be taken lightly and a high level investigation must be carried out. After that severe punishment must be given to those responsible", Hussain added.
Commenting on the BJP-JD(U) relationship after the Nitish Kumar-led party parted ways with the NDA alliance, Hussain said " It is them(the Janata Dal United) who have placed us in the opposition. At every step now we are compelled to act as part of the opposition."
Earlier today Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had addressed the media for the first time after the Chhapra tragedy which claimed the lives of 23 students in Chhapra district of Bihar, and announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe has been ordered into the case.
Kumar had also announced a compensation of two lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased. (ANI)
