Guwahati, April 10: Biswanath Chariali today came from behind and beat Barpeta by eight wickets to win the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy senior inter-district plate group cricket tournament at Nehru Stadium here today.
Leading by 108 runs in the first innings, Barpeta were bowled out for 84 runs in 39.1 overs in their second innings this morning. Chasing a target of 193 runs in the second innings, the Biswanath Chariali batsmen held their nerve and piled up 195 for two in 53.5 overs.
Thanks to some superb bowling by Biswanath medium pacer Siddhartha Sankar Baruah and Rahul Kaushik, Barpeta never got a foothold in the second innings. Altogether, five Barpeta batsmen were dismissed for a duck.Only the overnight pair of Bhaskar Borah (23, 4x3) and skipper Himanjit Baruah (31, 4x7) managed to negotiate the Biswanath bowling attack. Together they strung a fourth-wicket partnership of 27 runs.
After Kaushik bowled out Borah, all the Barpeta batsmen, except Nayanjyoti Das (6), were out for nought. First innings centurion Kangkan Das was also bowled by Kaushik for a duck.
Kaushik returned with figures of four for 32 and Baruah had figures of three for 22.
Ramakant Singh of Biswanath missed a century by three runs, remaining unbeaten on 97 (4x16) with Bikash Kurmi (18, 4x1, 6x1) at the other end. The duo made an unbeaten stand of 73 runs.
Earlier, opener Manjit Barkatakee scored a patient 52 (4x6, 6x1), sharing a 112-run second wicket partnership with Singh.
Pacer Zaved Akhtar Khan and Parag Barman of Barpeta picked up a wicket each.
Kaushik was adjudged Man of the Match.
