Best Hair and Skin Care Tips for Holi


Playing with colours and water, gulping down glasses of thandai and bingeing on some of the most delectable mithais are some of the reasons why we look forward to Holi. But does your skin, which has to bear harsh colours and has to be drenched in water for prolonged periods, agree with you? So if you want to keep your skin happy this Holi, follow these simple pre and post Holi skin and hair care tips.

Quick essentials

  • Select a dress that covers your skin completely.
  • Choose soft cotton fabrics in light colours like white or beige so the display of colours is possible. Make sure the fabric is not too transparent after getting wet.
  • Apply a good quality SPF 30 sunscreen along with a layer of oil or petroleum jelly all over your body. This prevents the colours from coming in direct contact with your skin.
  • Drench your cuticles in olive oil so it does not soak up any colour.
Before Holi- Hair care

  • Oil your hair from your scalp to tip the night before. Dermatologists recommend using coconut or olive oil for Holi. Give your scalp a gentle massage before you sleep and repeat the process in the morning.
  • If you have sensitive skin, add a few drops of lemon juice to your scalp and spread it around. Lemon juice will ensure that the Holi colours don’t irritate your scalp.
  • Do not leave your hair open. Tie it into a ponytail or a bun and cover your head with a scarf.
Perfect makeup for Holi

Use melt proof makeup that does not get affected by water. Make sure all products are waterproof.

  • Apply a thick coat of sunscreen.
  • Apply a lip guard or a long stay lipstick that can keep the colour of your lips constant.
  • Keep your face natural by using nude or creme eye shadows and rosy pink blush.
  • Do not go overboard on your colour palette since it is not the right day to indulge in bright and bold colours.
  • Trim and paint your nails in bright colours to protect them from toxic colours.
Eye care

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from colours. Don’t wear lenses while playing holi.
  • It is always better to carry a bottle of water to splash your eyes, in case some colour gets into it. You cannot really trust the water which is available on site as it may irritate your eyes further.
Best ways to remove colours

  • Do not scrub the colour off with soap. Opt for a mild cleanser and follow it up with a lot of moisturising cream.
  • Use a mixture of besan and milk to get rid of the colour from your face and neck.
  • Rubbing papaya on your face can also help you remove the colours.

Here are some great face packs that you can try at home-

  • For oily skin: Mix 2 tbsps. of multani-mitti in glycerine and water to make a paste. Apply it on your face for 15 minutes and wash off.


  • For normal skin: Take 2 tbsp. of masoor daal and mix it in 1 tbsp. flour. Make a paste by adding rosewater and a pinch of haldi. Apply it on your face for 10 minutes and wash off.
  • For dry skin: Mix 1 tbsp. of soyabean flour in milk. Add glycerine and a pinch of sea salt to make a paste. Scrub your face for 10 minutes and wash off.
How to remove colour from hair

  • Rinse your hair completely without using shampoo at first. Once the colours are removed, then you can wash them with a mild shampoo and conditioner.
  • To revitalise your hair further, apply egg yolk on the scalp and rinse off after 30 minutes.
  • You can also apply a mixture of honey and olive oil for deep conditioning.
Post Holi- Skin care tips

  • For the next two weeks, apply a multani mitti face pack every alternate day to ensure that your skin remains soft and supple.
  • Do not go for any skin treatment like waxing, threading, facials or any other external medication on skin for two to three days after Holi. Your skin is very sensitive and these treatments may cause an adverse reaction.
