London, Mar 26 (ANI): England's batting coach Graham Gooch said that the team has had a rude awakening during the New Zealand Test series, which was a draw, even as they prepare for the epic Ashes series this year.
Admitting that the team has performed much below the required standard, Gooch said that the series have given a harsh dose of reality to the team and added that layers' performances cannot be justified just on the basis of a few pieces of paper or rankings, the Sun reports.
Gooch further said that to compete, a team needs to play good cricket on the field, adding that in comparison to New Zealand, England has not played the game to its full potential.
Gooch, who is the most experienced and decorated member of England's management further said that he would not like to take the Black Caps lightly especially after the way they dominated the first Test.
However, the batting coach expressed his satisfaction with captain Alastair Cook's performance and said that the young captain has done very well with his captaincy, adding that he is constantly learning and improving.
According to Gooch, although things have gone badly for England, he is confident that they will come back stronger and added that winning or losing is just another step down the road in his experience. (ANI)
