Bandh called on R-Day

Shillong, Jan. 22: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today announced a 18-hour bandh to boycott the Republic Day celebrations.

The bandh will commence on January 25 from 10pm and continue till 6pm on January 26. It will be effective in all the six districts in Khasi-Jaintia Hills. Only churchgoers, ambulances and the media are exempted from the bandh.

"We want to remind the people that our community has not obtained the "republic" on its own will. However, our community has been made a victim under Indian terrorism in 1948, when the Union government forced our people to sign the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement," Sainkupar Nongtraw, HNLC publicity secretary, said in a statement.

Nongtraw also said the community's security will depend on how historical facts are properly documented, as till date nothing has been mentioned in history books about the events which took place after 1947.

The outfit hoped that the bandh would be effective like in earlier years.
