Assam in sight of innings win

Cooch behar trophy

Guwahati, Dec. 24: Assam today were in sight of an innings victory against hosts Railways on the third day of their four-day Cooch Behar Trophy (under-19) plate group A match at Rajkot.

Opting to bat, Assam piled up 438 in the first innings and bowled out the Railways batsmen for 228 in 83.5 overs in the first innings today. Asked to follow on, the railmen were reduced to 105 for six in 47.5 overs at stumps today.

Railways resumed their first innings at overnight 93 for three and lost wickets at regular intervals after a steady start to the day to be all out shortly before tea this afternoon.

T.V. Dinesh, who was not out on 30, today topscored for the side with 64 runs (4x8) before he was caught of a delivery by Sajid Khan to be the fifth wicket of the side. His overnight partner H. Singh also scored 44 (4x6) before running himself out.

After their dismissals, Railways lost two more wickets in quick succession and Rajiv Chaturvedi (20, 4x2), T. Gill (18, 4x2) and S. Huda (17 not out, 4x3) tried in vain to consolidate the innings.

Sajid Khan, Siddhartha Sankar Baruah and Roshan Alam shared two wickets apiece, conceding 32, 45 and 47 runs respectively.

In their second innings, Railways lost three quick wickets to be reduced to 60 for three in 18 overs with Sidhartha Baruah accounting for two for 23.

However, Dinesh and H. Singh managed to negotiate the Assam bowling attack to remain unbeaten on 30 (4x3) and 15 (4x2) sharing an undefeated partnership of 33 runs at draw of stumps today.

Railways need 117 runs more with seven wickets intact to avoid an innings defeat tomorrow.
